That’ll be $75
Today I said goodbye to some new friends as I made my way home from a multiple day event in Tahoe. Most of the people I had never met until this week and am sad to see my time with them end.
Over a year ago I joined Ryan Fletcher’s band of like-minded misfits. All of us found Ryan’s podcast and with that his message that has resonated with all of us. Twice a year a prime property is rented, people fly in from all over the country and in some cases Canada or New Zealand. Food, swimming, horseshoes, cornhole, ping pong, billiards, conversation but most important business and personal improvement take up most of the time.
This was my first time attending this event and I didn’t know quite what to expect. I happened to be on the same flight from Long Beach to Reno as three other people going. When I landed in Long Beach I received a warm welcome from Ron Nedd, Richard A Wamsat III, and Clifford DuVernois. We were joined by Jay Lieberman and his air mattress in Reno.
As we loaded up the car we headed to our next destination the Blue Angel Cafe in Tahoe. The staff was given some warning I believe but it didn’t take long for 15ish of us to smash some tables together and change the course of their lunchtime for the next few hours. I wouldn’t be surprised if their staff talk about that day for months to come.
Although I spent a lot of time just observing I enjoyed all of it. Our event hadn’t even started yet.
As we got closer to our 4:00 check-in time we found our way to the house that had been rented and found the remaining members of the group. 32 in total. We lined up our bags and waited for the front door to open for the mad dash to the beds. That’s why Jay had an air mattress. People were sleeping everywhere. It was a welcomed chaos.
Over the next few days learned a lot that will help me continue my ever changing steps in my personal and business development. I just wish I would have taken pictures.
I knew going to Tahoe that I would have an eight-hour layover in Long Beach on the way back. I was okay with it. I thought I could use that time to catch up on some work and do some planning. Maybe watch an episode or two of Stranger Things.
I decided my time was as better spent trying to find a way to cut down my layover.
As great as it was to be surrounded by people with similar ideas and goals in Tahoe I wanted to get home to my people. I wanted to see my family. Even though I have days that I get frustrated with my little humans I missed them. Every day I was video calling home a couple of times to see them. I also knew that Tavia has been hard at work with the help of some truly amazing neighbors running our house while I played.
With just a simple question at the desk in Long Beach and the luck of an empty seat, I was able to get on an earlier flight.
That’ll be $75 said the Jet Blue employee as she finished switching my flight.
The best part was how excited my kids were when I surprised them by coming home early.
The best $75 I have spent in a long time.
